Music has always been a very large part of my life. In high school, I was selected for the United States Collegiate Choir’s European tour. Sadly, my parents wouldn’t allow me to go and I never let them forget what an honor it was simply to be chosen. (There are very few things I consider worthy enough to stoop to pettiness, but this was certainly one of them.)
Over the years, I have been asked to join existing, working bands and even to lay some backing tracks, all of which I declined, but not due to any reason you may think. I would seriously LOVE to take my singing further, but I chose to put my children first and not subject them to the uncertainty of that life or to their father’s expected jealousy (he plays guitar and has been in various bands, but has only had one paying gig). Instead, I settled for running karaoke for about six years and I loved every moment.
Through karaoke, I was introduced to songs I never would have heard otherwise and I even took the time to learn the songs my customers requested of me regardless of the genre. Man . . . I thought I had eclectic musical tastes BEFORE I was a KJ (similar to a DJ, but for karaoke), now I listen to almost everything. The secret to enjoying such a variety of musical genres, for me at least, is the lyrics. I guess that makes a lot of sense since I sing; lyrics are a rather important component to any song if you want to give the vocalist something to do besides just standing there.
The right combination of words can convey so much more than what the music alone can. There will be times when my emotions and thoughts are bundled together so tightly, I’ll post a portion of the song that will most closely decipher the mental chaos. This doesn’t necessarily mean that little snippet is the extent of what I’m trying to say because, sometimes, the whole song will speak for me. If you really want to know which of these is the important piece to the puzzle, just ask.
The following songs seem to pop into my playlist a lot; eventually, they (among others) will end up as #randomlyrics.
\”The Promise\” by Tracy Chapman
Well this is interesting. Lyrics are very important, only if they are good, like poetry.
I see music more from the perspective of a composer, (esp film music, classical music) so I like instrumental music more, I am interested in what you can do with an orchestra and different musical instruments. Some vocalists do treat their voice as a musical instrument that is inside of them and that’s really beautiful.
Unless there is a really beautiful voice and really good lyrics (Nightwish have some damn great lyrics), I am not interested in the song.
Thank for posting these songs, I knew them already, but I loved Home the most, since I first heard it.
I’d love to hear your voice, is there a recording somewhere? At least a small one?

The only recording I’m aware of was lost sometime between when mom died in 2000 and my stepdad died in 2008.
